Towards inclusive security in South Sudan
Earlier this month Operation 1325 organised a workshop in Juba, South Sudan, on implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in Security Sector Reform (SSR) processes. For the workshop sessions Operation 1325, with sponsorship from the Folke Bernadotte Academy, brought in international SSR expert, Dr. Anthony Cleland Welch. One of the most vital things for SSR to work is that it has to be owned locally, Welch writes.
A Tribute to Sudanese Women
I came to Sudan two and a half months ago as part of my Masters Program in Migration and Intercultural Relations. The later, being affiliated with Ahfad University for Women – yes, there is such a thing as a women’s university in Sudan, gave me the opportunity to pursue an internship in this fascinating country. Hence, I found myself with the “Nuba Women for Education and Development Association (NuWEDA)” and in the middle of women’s peace and development work.
A network full of creativity and courage
In a heat of almost 40° Celsius and in a room without air condition we gathered, women from a number of civil society organisations and I (Emmicki Roos), in Khartoum to engage in a workshop concerning the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The meetings that took place last week were organised by Operation 1325, focusing on what should be included in a Sudanese national action plan for 1325, how to conduct advocacy around the issue and how the implementation of the resolution best can be monitored.
