About Operation 1325    

From Resolution to Operation

In 2003 several Swedish women organisations met to discuss how they could cooperate in order to contribute to the implementation of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325:2000 on Women, Peace and Security. A network was established and in 2006 it evolved into an umbrella organisation – Operation 1325.

The aim of Operation 1325 is to assist in the implementation of resolution 1325 in Sweden and internationally.

What does Operation 1325 do?

Inform

We raise awareness of resolution 1325 among the public and inform about how women’s peace work and the implementation of the resolution proceed worldwide.

Train and build capacity

Since we want to increase the possibility for women to participate as agents in all work related to peace and security we arrange courses and seminars in capacity building and training of women on relevant topics.

Political advocacy work

We constantly encourage decision-makers to take actions in line with resolution 1325. We inform, advocate and remind politicians about the undertakings that the Swedish national action plan involve. In 2007 we also initiated this work on EU level on a small scale.

Our goals are:

• To plan and implement a joint program for education and capacity building of women, with a special focus on conflict areas
• To build local, national and international networks in support of resolution 1325
• To use these networks for information, communication and for raising public awareness
• To influence politicians and other decision-makers nationally and internationally
• To facilitate and ensure the recruitment of women for work in informal and formal peace building on all levels. This could for instance be done by creating national and regional resource banks/rosters of skilled and qualified womenMember organisations

Five Swedish women organisations are members of the umbrella Operation 1325:

• Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom – WILPF (the Swedish section)
• Women for Peace (the Swedish section)
• UN Women Sweden
• The Swedish Federation of Immigrant Women’s Associations
• The Swedish Ecumenical Women’s Council

The Staff

The staff of Operation 1325 currently consists of one project coordinator for the office who also coordinates international projects, one information officer and one education coordinator. They report their work back to the 12-member board who has adopted guidelines at an annual meeting.
